The resources of the Abay Myrzakhmetov Kokshetau University are provided according to the requirements of the Republic of Kazakhstan national education standards. These standards include aspects like constructions codes and standards and the policies for checking and regulation. The infrastructure of the university includes educational and laboratory buildings, libraries, a printing house, dining rooms, first-aid posts and gyms.
In total there are facilities to accommodate the universities branch for distance education. There are one hundred and seventy educational and laboratory offices, including forty two specialized laboratories equipped according to the modern requirements of the subjects taught in them.
A wide range of educational and scientific literature is available.
The land property of the university is 35484.2 sq.m and it is zoned for educational and laboratory purposes.
The university is systematically implementing its strategic development plan for 2016 – 2020, and according to this plan the university is modernizing its corporate network:
- Employees and students have licensed organizational and educational support from internal sources as well as from the internet.
- E-mail, an electronic flyer board and the university’s program are available.
- The university is integrating its document management system by centralizing the student and employee databases, and the control system for the distribution of academic work loads.
- The students have access to personified interactive resources such as training materials and tasks, self assessment, academic consultations for planning and implementation of the academic program and support in choosing a carrier.
The auditoriums are all equipped according to the needs of the subjects being taught in then. The equipment includes multimedia such as interactive boards, a modern military training area, and three gyms.
The latest version of the virtual “Compass” program is installed on the computers of the Department of Transport, Traffic and Vehicle Operation. This software includes descriptive geometry and engineering graphics.
There are laboratories equipped for physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, and information systems and informatics. Students can work on computers with Delphi, C++ 3D Max3D, Studio, MaxFoxPro, Corell3 and other programs installed on them.
The university has a laboratory where environmental protection can be studied. Here students can study Environment Ecology Management. This includes aspects such as the purification of natural and sewage water, and keeping the air at swimming pools free from pollution.
The Arts Department is equipped with easels, figures of plaster, tablets with sketches of models, etc for students who want to study Design. There is also a sewing workshop equipped with the newest in sewing machines, overlockers, male and female figures and ironing tables.
Students in the Department of Foreign Languages have fully equipped auditoriums where students can study two of six languages (Russian, Kazakh, English, German, Arab, and Chinese) to become interpreters and translators or teachers.
The Tax Committee of the Akmola Region assisted the university in establishing an auditorium where students can study tax reporting in an environment as close to reality as possible. They use specialized electronic programs with templates of forms used in tax reporting. Programs to study other disciplines in Economics are also installed.
The university cooperates with several research institutes of which two are international centers and together they do research in disciplines and areas such as green and new technology, social and pedagogical projects, criminal law, criminal trials and criminology. These projects allow students to study master’s degrees in seven disciplines. In total the university has twenty-two laboratories. New programs are constantly started.
A high speed LAN (1 GB) with powerful servers, cellphone signal suppressors and modern storages for databases links all computers of the university. Personnel and students have free and unlimited internet access through a high speed fiber optic cable with an external 32mb/s/s 6mb/s telecommunication portal. A cctv network monitors the activities on the campus.
The university has its own printing shop equipped with the latest computers, and printing and copying machines, and can manage an output of two hundred fifty-four thousand pages. The shop focuses on publishing and printing of scientific and educational material.
There is a book fund through which the libraries buy books and scientific magazines and newspapers. Because of a contract with Thomson Reuters many licensed versions of books and manuals are available in electronic format. “Vestnik” in hard copy and electronic formats is the university’s own quarterly magazine. The newspaper is registered at the National Center of Science and Technology Evaluation. The university also publishes a newspaper called Shugyla-KUAM which is available in paper format only.
Students have quick access to official information of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan through an official website (www.adilet.gov.kz, and a computer-based legal research system called "Lawyer").
The library has access to the following help and bibliographic devices: Kazakh Automated Library Information System, the electronic catalog, electronic library, the systematic catalog, the alphabetical catalog, and a systematic card file of articles.
Students have access to modern scientific and informative literature on current problems of economy, science and technology, informatics, history, arts and culture, law, pedagogics and psychology, ecology, linguistics, political science, and philosophy in reading rooms.
The library informs students and teachers of new acquisitions through a monthly newsletter and twice a year a bulletin of periodicals notifies them about the periodicals the university has subscribed to.
The AMKU library cooperates with sixty two publishing houses and book centers in Kazakhstan and Russia. These are publishers and distributers like: Economy, Zheti Zhargy, LEM Publishing House, Interpress of OXFORD, Macmillan (Kazakhstan), Bilim, Bastau, The Central Collector of Scientific Libraries, Foliant, Nur Press, and LLP Infotekh in Ust-Kamenogorsk. AMKU also collaborates with higher education publishers like Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages, Kazakh Academy of Transport and Communications named after M. Tynyshpayev, Kazakh Leading Academy of Architecture and Civil engineering and others.
Librarians in the electronic reading rooms assist the students with access and selection of information available on the internet.
Besides the above students can also acquire the use of reference material like guides for students on training courses, instructions on tests, term papers, completed master’s degree dissertations, computer programs guides, grants and other materials.
The university’s website (www.kuam,kz) enables two-way communication between the teachsers, the students, and the public and other stakeholders. The site provides information about the main activities of the institution, its mission, purpose and tasks, the work of the faculties, departments and other structures, and the personal pages of the teaching staff. There is a virtual book of complaints, and then there is information about publications and references for the use of external networks. There is also an events page sharing news about what happens on the campusses. All copyright laws of educational and methodical materials are observed.
The “Platonus” information system is in use.
AMKU is not just a residential university. It also provides distance education for those who find it difficult to be fulltime students. The advantage of distance learning is that people already in jobs can study while earning an income and furthermore distance learning reduces the cost of higher education. It makes it possible for the university to attract students not only from the Akmola region, but as well as from the rest of the country.
Since 2013 the university uses the TAMOSUNIVERSITY SUITETUS 1.9 (Tamos University Suite) to administer the system of residential and distance education. Other higher education institutions in the Republic of Kazakhstan have already successfully implemented this software.
This software allows:
- to automate the academic credit system;
- the university organizes distance learning both at the remote and local offices.
Experience shows that the use of ASUO TUS 1.9 considerably simplifies administrative tasks, such as – registers for class lists, maintain sheets, transcripts and many other things.
A distinctive feature of our decision to use ASUO TUS 1.9 is that by centralizing all information on entrants, students, teachers, and progress an “electronic university” is created.
Simultaneously ASUO TUS 1.9 supports traditional methods for checking and accounting, thus creating a bimodal model of the electronic university.
